When the Campers Go Home!

From the RFK Leadership fb page...  At the debriefing on friday right after the campers have left. A Counselor from our South Dallas camp grabbed these debriefing cards to express how she was feeling. She beautifully captured how we all feel at the end of the week - and beyond. 

"Sad" because I may never get to see my girls again. "Prayerful" because I will always be praying for my girls. "Unprepared" because it's always hard to say goodbye after 5 short days with them. "Humble" because I know that no matter how hard I think my life is, these children have been through so much worse. I am absolutely in love with this camp. I will be doing it every year for the rest of my life. This is my passion, this is my calling. I love all these sweet children with all of my heart and it never gets easier saying goodbye to them. Just 365 days til next camp!"

Camper Story from Alaska

(This story is from a guy named Jarett.  I trained him in Alaska last year and he volunteers for 2 of our camps in Alaska).

Royal Family Kids Mat-Su Camp Story 

Matthew 18:10-14

"Be careful. Don't think these little children are worth nothing. I tell you that they have angels in heaven who are always with my father in heaven. If a man has a hundred sheep but one of these sheep gets lost, he will leave the other ninety-nine on the hill and go look for the lost sheep. I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that were never lost. In the same way, your father in heaven does not want any of these children to be lost."

This last week out at RFKC I had a child who became angry over a game with other boys and he took off running in the woods and down to the lake. We are taught not to chase after these kids but follow them with another cousin to keep an eye on them were they go. This guy didn't stop and lead me and his cousin on a 1hr swamp and bush hike around the lake. At times this campers would yell leave me alone, go away, and other not so choice words but we continued to watch over him as he lead us deeper and deeper in the woods. We got to a point to were he was at the shore of the lake (opposite from were are camp is) wearing his sneakers he goes into the water up to his shins. 20 feet away I join him in the water wearing my sneakers. His cousin shortly follows and hops in the water. He then turns to us and smiles and chuckles a bit. We all laugh and start to trek back to camp along the shore up to our knees in cold lake water. We make it back to camp and were heading up to the cabins when he grabs a special heart necklace given to him at camp. he then says " You know what I'm doing cousin Jarett." I reply "What are you doing" "I have Gods heart and spirit inside of me. Whenever I become frustrated I can grab this heart necklace and pray to God about my anger and troubles and they will go away."

Can God use a cowboy hat?

Our camp begins in 7 days. I just spoke with a CASA worker of two siblings who will be coming to our camp. The oldest is a girl who came to our camp last year. The CASA worker told me that when this girl is having a difficult time with the events of her life, she puts on her cowboy hat that was given to her last year at camp. The worker said, "When I show up to her house, if she's wearing the hat, I know she needs some extra attention and fun."

Does a week make a difference? Can God use a cowboy hat as a way for a little girl to remember the love and stability she felt at camp?

This sister and her little brother have been in 1 shelter and 4 foster homes since she was at our camp last year, and they will say "Good bye" to their birth parents for the last time on Monday morning, immediately before they come to camp.

Janet and I started the RFK Concord camp in 2001 and this year they celebrated their 15th Anniversary!  I was able to visit for a day and not only see the great success that continues, but see the kids that continue to come to camp and receive life-changing moments!
